Obituary |
- Robert C. Baker, the well-known mortician and civic leader of Bloomsburg, Pa. and a devoted harness horse enthusiast, died suddenly at his farm, Saturday, January 22nd, 1949 from a coronary occlusion. Mr. Baker had gone to his farm, where he had been active in breeding and raising harness horses, in the late afternoon and was leaning against a manager watching a veterinarian examine one of hs broodmares when he was stricken. The fifty-three year old sportsman was dead before the doctor could reach his side. He had apparently been enjoying his usual good health throughout the week, attending his business and going to various activities with his family and friends. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Robert C. Baker, Jr. a student at Bucknell; Oren Asher Baker; three sisters and three brothers. Mr. Baker was a native of Bloomsburg and spent his entire life there. He and his brothers for many years were associated with their father, the late Grant G. Baker, in the operation of the family mortician business, carrying it on after their father's death.
He entered the Army in World War I when a junior at Gettysburg College and was later commissioned a lieutenant in the Infantry. Previous to joining his father, he was engaged in operating a grain and produce business and later an electrical firm. Active in many organizations he was a past-exalted ruler of the Elks Lodge in Bloomsburg, and prominent member of the American Legion, the Masons, the Kiwanis, the Eagles and several other fraternal organizations. At the time of his death he was serving on the Bloomsburg Board of Health, a position he had held for many years. He was a former chairman of the Democratic County Committee.
Mr. Baker was a member of the Church of Christ and funeral services will be held from the Baker Funeral Home, Wednesday, January 26.
In recent years he became increasingly interested in the breeding of trotters and pacers and maintained an attractive farm in Hemlock Township three miles from Bloomsburg. In partnership with John U. Steele, he had seven broodmares, and four yearling colts on the farm.
For years "Bob" Baker was in the harness horse game and enjoyed driving, on several occasions, his own horses at the nearby county fairs. He also assisted Levi Harner in jogging and working his large stable in the spring of each year. However, he had laid plans to get into the breeding end of the game and sell annually a well-bred group of colts. His four colts that he had planned to sell at the sale next fall were of very high calibre; he having had many good offers on several of the colts when they were only weanlings that would have been welcomed by most yearling consignors.
