David John Jenkins was born on March 28, 1866 in Ebbw Vale, Monmouthshire, Wales. He came to
the U.S. in 1868 with his parents, and the family settled in Howard Twp., Centre Co., PA, where
his father worked as a puddler at the iron works.
By 1880, the family had moved to Turbot Twp., Northumberland Co., PA., where his father
worked at the Puddle Mill of the Milton Manufacturing Company.
On April 23rd 1895, David married Kate E. Hill of Milton, and the family lived in
Milton, PA. They had two children - Sarah Alice, born in 1896, and John Hill, born April 14,
1898. Sometime in the next year, they moved to 185 S. Second St. in Steelton, Dauphin Co., PA
where their third child, Herbert Leslie, was born on July 9, 1899.
Kate died about 3 weeks after giving birth to their third child. The children were sent
to live with their grandparents, Seth Comly Hill and Rachel (Angeny) Hill at 220 Center St. in
Milton, while their father stayed in Steelton to work.
Sarah Alice Jenkins went to Syracuse University and became a schoolteacher. She
developed encephalitis, and died at the age of 41, unmarried.
John Hill Jenkins never married. When he was 12, he suffered a severe concussion in a
skating accident, which left him with permanent brain damage that affected his personality. In
1930, he was still living at the Hill home on Center St. and was unemployed.
Herbert Leslie Jenkins left Milton in the late 1920s, and went to Colorado to become a
farmer or rancher. He married Jewel Maureen Maret in Elizabeth, CO on August 8, 1935. The
couple had three children, two of whom died in infancy.
